Journalism is in fact history on the run.

The news is staged, anticipated, reported, analyzed until all interest is wrung from it and abandoned for some new novelty.

Journalism constructs momentarily arrested equilibriums and gives disorder an implied order. That is already two steps from reality.

I don't write constantly; it's two serials and a novel a year.

Sparky Anderson taught me this a long time ago: 'There's three ways you can treat a person. You can pat 'em on the butt, you can kick 'em in the butt, or you can leave 'em alone.'

That does not mean that we must forego just and fair criticism, or refrain from opposition to policies which are debatable or which do not command our approval.
