I was one of the only ones there interested in acting. You find when you're doing school plays that a lot of people there were on punishment, or something.

I have a lot of kids in my district who haven't been to the beach, much less Washington, D.C., and that's 20 miles away.

I'm a great believer in poetry out of the classroom, in public places, on subways, trains, on cocktail napkins. I'd rather have my poems on the subway than around the seminar table at an MFA program.
