The first four months of writing the book, my mental image is scratching with my hands through granite. My other image is pushing a train up the mountain, and it's icy, and I'm in bare feet.

If I had written something, and I had written myself into a corner, I didn't abandon it. Because I remembered: There's always more.

I'd date someone younger or older; age doesn't matter to me. Or looks, really - it's all about maturity.

I'm a great believer in poetry out of the classroom, in public places, on subways, trains, on cocktail napkins. I'd rather have my poems on the subway than around the seminar table at an MFA program.
