Sometimes I wonder if I got lulled into not wanting things because I grew up black in this country.

It is hard for a black man to just be himself. We spend so much time in defense of something that is indefensible because there is nothing to defend.

It's good to like yourself, and that only comes from hard work, from doing. But vanity is dangerous; it can trip you badly.

It took me realizing that a broken heart has never actually killed anyone to find the courage to ask for what I want, in just about every situation. That was part of my own growing up.

Well, I actually wrote her a letter a couple of days ago congratulating her. The tone I tried to convey in the letter is, look, you are a part of a great American historical process.
