The most important influence in my childhood was my father.

My father started me singing in church.

Under the previous regime of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, I was detained. So was my wife, Serkalem Fasil. She gave birth to our son in prison in 2005.

I was raised in the Baptist church... but I didn't really have a real committed experience with Christ until my father died.
