Performance has to be mainstream art. This is what I'm fighting for. Marina Abramovic artfightmainstream Change image and share on social
I wanted to be an animator originally. I went to art school; I went to art college and everything. But that screen was just calling me. animatorartcall share on social
The art of bread making can become a consuming hobby, and no matter how often and how many kinds of bread one has made, there always seems to be something new to learn. Julia Child artbreadconsume Change image and share on social
Appropriation is the idea that ate the art world. Go to any Chelsea gallery or international biennial and you'll find it. It's there in paintings of photographs, photographs of advertising, sculpture with ready-made objects, videos using already-existing film. Jerry Saltz advertiseappropriationart share on social
A certain rough-around-the-edges improvisational looseness - a sense of something coming together before your eyes, or not quite - may be one of the things that distinguishes performance art from theater. Roberta Smith artcomedistinguish share on social
I'm glad I made a piece of art that can be interpreted so widely. Art is always interpreted subjectively. Paula Cole artgladinterpret Change image and share on social
My parents didn't have records, they didn't have radios, and they didn't listen to music. My grandmother was my main connection to art and music. She could play piano very well, and she had perfect pitch. Gerard Way artconnectiongrandmother share on social
Theatre's great. It's such an act of faith. It's a wonderful art form where you suspend disbelief for a couple of hours. It's a lovely art form because the actors and the audience are alive and in the room at the same time together. That's why I love the theatre. Israel Horovitz actactoralive share on social
I don't like most contemporary art. But I think if you talked to any person who's heavily involved in contemporary art, they'd say the same thing. If you go to a biennale, you don't expect to like much of it. Tom Rachman artbiennalecontemporary share on social
Being a fan of authentic Dada, I find today's art - what I call 'Bankers' Dada' - mind-numbingly dull. The most challenging work I've seen of late is by The British Art Resistance. Their document, 'A Call for Heroes in an Age of Cowards', is apt in these days of witless chancers. Billy Childish ageaptart share on social
